Roundnet Season Break

Just like the rest of you, I've been lounging around watching roundnet highlight videos and hitting serves against my bedroom wall.

So, I was thinking it would be cool to write an article to show others what some roundnet players around the nation, and world, are doing during this downtime!

Read More About Ravi Kandula Below!

A few of Ravi Kandula's notable career stats:

  • 3rd place in the premier division at 2019 Spikeball Roundnet Association National Championships
  • 6th place in the premier division at 2019 SRA East Regional Championships
  • Ranked 20th in 2019 SRA end of season rankings - With partner Emerson Dean
  • 2020 'SRA Roundnet Tour Series' poster athlete

What Are You Doing During the Roundnet Season Break?

Roundnet Training:

"I realized I was losing a lot of games/series because my serve would disappear late in tournaments and it’d be really tough to generate breaks without hitting serves."
Ravi said he has been working a lot on some semi-aggressive “get it on serves”, as well as aggressive first serves.

#2 Setting –

"This was something I knew I could practice on my own and so I made a point of it to become comfortable setting from any distance, height, and position with both hands.
I think this is where I’ve made the most progress since the start of quarantine."

#3 Defense –

"I've been playing pickup with a few friends in my hometown and just have been working on the mechanics of my body defense, something I never used to it. I always used to try and chase down every ball but I realized that would drain my energy pretty quickly."

Ravi has been pinpointing areas where he needs to improve, and figuring out ways to work on those aspects of his roundnet game!

#4 Hitting –

"I haven’t practiced this nearly as much as the first 3 items but hitting is something easy to practice on a day where you don’t really feel like training much."

Non Roundnet Related:

#1 Lifting Weights/Working Out –

Ravi mentions, "I’ve always been big on weight lifting and so I’ve been continuing to do so throughout quarantine.

I actually bought adjustable dumbbells and a free bench back in December and I can’t overstate how good of an investment that was in hindsight. It’s kept me in good shape throughout these last few months."

#2 Sprinting –

"I’ve started doing track workouts with one of my roundnet friends in order to improve my speed.

We’ve been sprinting maybe 3-4 times a week and it’s been a nice change of pace to get out of my comfort zone and try something new in terms of working out.

What Are You Doing For Yourself During Downtime From Roundnet Gatherings?

Most of Ravi's time is taken up by his internship so he hasn't had too much time to start many new hobbies.

Ravi says, "I had been playing a good bit of poker before work started and was looking to start playing in online games."

Advice for Others During This 'Free-Time' to Help Improve at Roundnet?

Ravi's Training Tips:

Train smart not hard.

Don’t practice serving everyday because you’ll hurt yourself.

Mix it up and make sure you are actually learning when you mess up while training.

Think about why you missed the set/hit/serve and consider how you can change your mechanics to make it better.

I’m personally a very technical learner and need to understand the very fine details to understand the overall motion.

One resource I’d recommend for other people who like technical analysis is HTR, Preston is really good at giving a technical overview of how to improve any skill and just really entertaining in general.

What Are You Missing Most Not Going To Tournaments/Pickup/Practice?

I definitely miss tournament days.

There is nothing else I’d be willing to wake up at 5am for with a smile on my face.

I miss seeing all the friends I’ve made throughout the country.

If you could play a tournament with anyone, who would it be?

Ryan Fitzgerald.
I feel like his level of defense is so exciting to watch and it must be even more fun to play with him.
He’d bring the kind of intensity I’d want to go into a tournament with.
Also, his setting is absolute butter.
