Roundnet Season Break

Just like the rest of you, I’m lounging around watching roundnet highlight videos and hitting serves against my bedroom wall.

So, I was thinking it would be cool to write an article to show others what some roundnet players around the nation, and world, are doing during this downtime!

Mens and Co-Ed Nationals Runner-Up

The fourth interview in this series features 2019 SRA PRO division men’s and 2018 Co-Ed roundnet national championship runner-up, top 5 world ranked player - Caleb Heck!

I asked Caleb to answer a few questions roundnet related, and not roundnet related.

Read ahead and keep practicing that lefty, tweener, reverse, cut drop serve!

Roundnet Training:

What are you doing related to training for roundnet?

Roundnet Related

My roundnet training usually consists of copious amounts of serving and hitting drills, drills that are going to continue to strengthen my muscle memory.

Especially during the winter, I’m usually hitting against a wall which also helps with my reaction time.

Non-Roundnet Related

I’ve never been a huge fitness buff. But I do like to stay active.

I do a fair amount of biking all-year round.

My core non-roundnet related workouts usually include pushups and sit-ups.

Nutrition:

If I’m being completely honest, I’m 19 years old and have never struggled with my weight or anything that would hinder my athletic prowess.

I love white cheddar cheez-its, cannolis, pizza, carrots, bananas with lots of peanut butter and strawberry/banana smoothies.

Non-Roundnet Related

What are you doing for yourself during downtime from roundnet gatherings?

For me, I opted out of going to college, so I don’t have classes/homework to occupy my time. But I do like to always keep my brain invigorated. So during quarantine I’ve read books, watched educational YouTube videos, listened to podcasts...

I like to read. ( Rich dad, poor dad. Love does, Money: Master the Game, The Bible, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective people)

I like to watch Television shows that stimulate my brain to think. (Shark Tank, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy)

I like playing board/card games. My two favorite games right now are Monopoly Deal and Codenames.

I don’t really have an artistic or musical bone in my body. I do enjoy baking though. Whether that’s cookies, cakes, brownies...

Advice for others during this freetime to help improve at roundnet?

Reach out to people and pick their brain.

Ask questions. Maybe FaceTime!

I’d really encourage everyone to not cascade into laziness. Yes, I’m not suggesting to never pick up the remote or turn on Netflix.... But don’t let that be your entire life during this time.

This season of quarantine for most of us around the world is offering us an extraordinary opportunity to focus our time on learning and getting better. Whether that’s roundnet or something completely different.

We all have things to work on.

What are you missing most not going to tournaments/pickup/practice?

The thing I’m missing most about roundnet is 100%:

The people.

The conversations.

The games.

It’s easy to detect its impact when it’s gone... how much of an influence the community has had on my life these past few years.

I absolutely can’t wait to be back on the field playing, laughing, discussing... HECK I’d argue about something if that would be what it takes to be back!! Haha.

Thanks Caleb! We can’t wait to watch you compete again, either!
